JEREMIAH S. DOUGLAS

Jeremiah S. Douglas, third son of Andrew J. and Susanna (Greenlee) Douglas, was born April 19, 1826 in Dearborn (now Ohio) Co., Indiana.   On October 12, 1850, he married Nancy Conner at Rising Sun, Indiana.   Nancy, born April 1827 in Dearborn Co., was a daughter of Timothy and Susanna (Light) Conner.   The Conner and Light families were originally from Pennsylvania, settled for a while in Clermont Co., Ohio, and finally moved to Dearborn Co., Indiana.
Jeremiah and Nancy left Ohio Co., and moved to Louisa Co., Iowa in 1851 where they remained for about a year, before settling permanently in Hardin Co., Illinois.   They purchased 160 acres of land in T11, R10, Section 31 (S 1/2 NW - NE NW 1/4) in Rock Creek Precinct.   While living there, they raised a family of four children:   (1) Andrew C., born February 18, 1852 in Louisa Co., Iowa, married Martha Jane Ledbetter in 1878.   They had ten children.   He died March 8, 1907 in New Haven Township, Gallatin Co., Illinois, and is buried at Potters Memorial Cemetery in Hardin Co.;   (2) George Jacob, born September 10, 1857, married three times, Mary Elizabeth Cook, second wife unknown, and Lora Gribble Beabout.   George and Mary Elizabeth had thirteen children.   He died August 27, 1934, and is buried at Cave Hill Cemetery, Cave-in-Rock;   (3) Stephen Arnold, born June 22, 1862, married three times, Mary Hannah Oxford, Alice Moore, and Mrs. Emma Reich.   He had two children, and one foster daughter.   Stephen died February 9, 1934 in Hardin Co., and is buried at Westwood Cemetery, Shawneetown, Gallatin Co., Illinois;   (4) Thomas J., born October 1863 never married.   Tom lived with his mother until her death.   He was nicknamed "Reelfoot Tom" due to being born with a deformity in both feet.   He worked as a blacksmith at Clark's Blacksmith Shop at Saline Mines for several years.   The last twelve years of his life were spent in seclusion on board his houseboat near the "Tip" on Saline River in Gallatin Co.   Tom died on his houseboat, and is buried at Westwood Cemetery in Shawneetown.
Jeremiah and Nancy were members of Wesley Chapel Methodist Church. Jeremiah was the first Worshipful Master and Charter Member of the Cave-in-Rock Masonic Lodge organized October 4, 1865.
Jeremiah died May 4, 1871, and is buried in the Old Methodist Cemetery at Cave-in-Rock.   Nancy died sometime between 1901 and 1910, and buried beside Jeremiah, although no monument marks her grave.
