DOUGLAS ROOTS
Andrew J. Douglas was born February 13, 1796 at Albion, Kennebec Co., Maine. His parents were William and Eunice (Bry) Douglas who were married October 22, 1776 in Maine. William was a son of James and Margaret (Elliott) Douglas. James and Margaret were married in York Co., Maine on October 28, 1731.
William and Eunice (Bry) Douglas were the parents of twelve children: (1) James born July 4, 1777; (2) Margaret born February 28, 1779; (3) William born April 30, 1782; (4) Eunice born October 4, 1784; (5) Jeremiah born February 18, 1787, married Margaret Smart, and died October 9, 1870 at Volga, Iowa; (6) Mary born June 1, 1789; (7) Francis born March 2, 1792; (8) Ruth born January 23, 1794; (9) Andrew J. born February 13, 1796; (10) Thomas W. born April 17, 1798, married Delila Payne, and died October 25, 1864 in Vermilion Co., Illinois; (11) Jane born April 25, 1800; and (12) John born Feb 1806. Andrew J. and three of his brothers, James, William, and Thomas W. settled in Dearborn Co., Indiana sometime before 1820. Thomas W. moved to Vermilion Co., Illinois in 1830. Another brother, Jeremiah, remained in Maine until 1839 when he brought his family west and settled first near Danville, Illinois. A short time later, he moved his family about twelve miles southwest of Madison, Wisconsin.
Andrew J. married Susanna Greenlee, daughter of William Greenlee around 1821 in Indiana. She was born in Ireland January 8, 1797. In 1827, Andrew bought property in Randolph Township, Section 1, T3 R2W, Dearborn Co. (now Ohio Co.), Indiana. While living there they raised a family of five children: (1) William Jefferson born May 12, 1822, married Sarah Ann Read, and died September 14, 1907 in Mason, Effingham Co., Illinois; (2) Eliza J. born April 27, 1824, married Stephen N. Scranton, remained in Indiana, and died December 8, 1897. Andrew J. and Susanna bought 80 acres of land in Hardin Co. on November 15, 1855 in Section 21 of T11 R9 (SE SW 1/4-SW SE 1/4), but were still living in Rising Sun in 1860. Their children were grown with families of their own. Jeremiah, George W., and Thomas Jefferson were living in Illinois, and Eliza J., their only daughter, was living in Indiana. The Ohio River offered them easy access to both locations - Cave-in-Rock and Rising Sun - both being Ohio River port towns.
Andrew J. died at Rising Sun, Indiana April 12, 1867 and is buried in the Cedar Hedge Cemetery next to his daughter, Eliza J. Scranton. Susanna died at Cave-in-Rock, Illinois July 11, 1872, and is buried in the Old Methodist Cemetery next to her son, Jeremiah S. Douglas.
